A User's Guide to Qualitative Research in Health Care   http://www.cche.net/usersguides/qualitative.asp  Site Reviews(6)
The Centre for Health Evidence (CHE) is a multi-disciplinary initiative that brings universities, health organizations, and professional associations together. CHE supports the learning, teaching, and practice of evidence-based health care. We provide a number of educational, consultation, and technical services, including building customized Internet Desktops. Our directors have guided CHE through years of consistent growth, bringing us to our current staff complement of twenty full-time positions. CHE employs highly resourceful and creative individuals. In order to carry out our goal of being an innovative leader in clinical decision support and health informatics, CHE hires people with a wide range of skills and experience. These skill sets include, but are not limited to, library science, information technology, computer programming, health service delivery, and administration. The Centre for Health Evidence is positioned within Health Information Management in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. We are a not-for-profit entity, funded entirely by grants and service agreements. We believe that operating within the academic sector provides greater intellectual freedom, free of commercial interests. This environment promotes collaboration, encourages discussion and change across organizations, and allows us to function on a cost-recovery rather than a for-profit financial model.

QSR International   http://www.qsr.com.au/  Site Reviews(8)
Qualitative research is all about exploring issues, understanding phenomena and answering questions. Unlike quantitative research, which uses numbers to arrive at conclusions, qualitative research uses unstructured information – like field notes, interview transcripts and survey responses. Our software lets you manage, shape and make sense of this information quickly and easily. Different from quantitative research which deals with numbers, qualitative research seeks out the 'why', not the 'how' of its topic. Focus groups, in-depth interviews, content analysis and semiotics are among the many approaches used in qualitative research to gain insight into people's attitudes, behaviors, value systems, concerns, motivations, aspirations, culture or lifestyles. The information that's collected and analyzed - such as case notes and interview transcripts - is unstructured and often text-based. This information can be messy and time consuming to analyze using manual methods. When faced with transcripts, emails, notes, diaries and audio or visual material - finding themes and extracting meaning can be a daunting task.

The Qualitative Report   http://www.nova.edu/ssss/QR/index.html  Site Reviews(2)
An online journal dedicated to qualitative research since 1990 Abstract: This study addresses ways Khmer refugee elders utilize traditional herbal medicine with Western biomedicine in the treatment and prevention of illnesses. Methods include semi-structured and informal interviews with elders and family members, semi-structured interviews with local health care providers and Khmer physicians, and participant observation of everyday life and actions specific to health beliefs and behaviors. Data reveal a reliance on traditional medical ideology for understanding and treating illnesses. Utilizing a traditional ideology, Khmer elders rely heavily on traditional treatments and use Western biomedicine as supplements or adjuncts to traditional preventive and curative practices. This research has important implications for health care providers who treat SEA elders, especially for diet and treatment of chronic illnesses often associated with aging populations. Key Words: Aging, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Southeast Asian

Qualitative versus Quantitative Research   http://edweb.sdsu.edu/Courses/Ed690DR/Class01/QvsQ.html  Site Reviews(1)
Qualitative researchers: reject the idea that social sciences (such as education and training) can be studied with the same methods as the natural or physical sciences; feel that human behavior is always bound to the context in which it occurs; therefore, behavior must be studied holistically, in context, rather than being manipulated; employ an "insider's" perspective; this makes qualitative research an intensely personal and subjective style of research. Quantitative researchers: argues that both the natural and social sciences strive for testable and confirmable theories that explain phenomena by showing how they are derived from theoretical assumptions; reduce social reality to variables in the same manner as physical reality; attempt to tightly control the variable in question to see how other variables are influenced.
