The Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE) was founded in 1970 to provide a means of communication among those persons conducting or using research in postsecondary education. The CSSHE adopted as its purpose "the advancement of knowledge of postsecondary education through the dissemination through publication and learned meetings". The mission of the CSSHE is to facilitate and promote, by means of comprehensive partnerships and programs, the creation, dissemination and application of research of exemplary quality in postsecondary education in Canada. The CSSHE is governed by a Board of Directors which normally meets 3 or 4 times a year. The Board consists of four officers and six members-at-large elected at the annual meeting held with the conference each spring. The program chair and the Canadian Journal of Higher Education editor are appointed by the Board of Directors, and serve on it ex-officio. The CSSHE is a registered charitable organization, funded through membership fees, subscriptions, donations and a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Governance is provided by an elected Board of Directors.

The Canadian Society for the Study of Education is the largest organization of professors, students, researchers and practitioners in education in Canada. CSSE is the major national voice for those who create educational knowledge, prepare teachers and educational leaders, and apply research in the schools, classrooms and institutions of Canada. Founded in 1972, the bilingual CSSE is an umbrella organization consisting of several national constituent associations. The objective of CSSE is to promote the advancement of Canadian research and scholarship in education. In order to fulfill its mandate, CSSE will: provide for the discussion of studies, issues and trends in education, and for the dissemination of research findings; promote exchanges among members and other educational researchers in Canada and internationally; foster partnerships and, through educational research, influence public policy and help determine the nature, structure and funding of the research agenda. CSSE endeavours to accomplish this objective through involving researchers reflective of the sociocultural diversity of Canada.

As the number of women grows in Faculites of Education, both as students and professors, in the teaching profession itself, in teachers' federations and in senior positions in boards of education, it is important to encourage research and debate about women's particular roles in the educational process. It is the expectation that CASWE will perform this function for all men and women interested in, and supportive of further developing research and social justice in this area. The objectives of the Association are the following: To advise the CSSE (Canadian Society for the Study of Education) on policies affecting women and education. To make recommendation to the Board of Directors, of CSSE on matters related to women and education. To promote exchanges of information about feminist scholarship and pedagogy within the CSSE. To develop forums within CSSE for social and political action related to women and education. To participate actively in programme development for and by women at the Annual Conference of CSSE. To assist in promoting the status of women at all Faculties of Education in Canadian universities.

The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) was established after Canada ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees concerning Higher Education in the States belonging to the Europe Region, in 1990, to assist Canada in carrying out its obligations under the terms of this convention. The convention promotes international mobility by advocating wider recognition of higher education and professional qualifications.

CESI member schools are corporations with Boards that operate at arm's length from the administration of the school and which maintain high educational and personal standards for their students while providing preparation for higher education. The schools' statements of purposes and objectives reflect legitimate educational and social goals. Schools must have five years of experience and must, within three years, be ready to undergo the full evaluation and accreditation process. The Institute provides evaluation and accreditation of a school's overall program. Schools will be evaluated in terms of their own statement of philosophy, purposes, and objectives, and in terms of the Institute's Standards For Accreditation of Schools, details of which are set out below. CESI's Standards cover Purposes and Objectives, Values, Discipline and Extra-Curriculum, Academic Program, School Organization and Administration, Personnel, School and Community, Admissions, Governance, Financial Management and Physical Plant.

Accredited Career Colleges can be recommended with confidence because they are meeting the requirements of accreditation on an on going basis and their performance has been validated by the independent board of National Commissioners of the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission (CETAC). Accredited Career Colleges that choose to continue to meet the Canadian Education and Training Accreditation Commission’s annual requirements may be recommended for students in their selection of a suitable career college. These recommended Career Colleges may also be utilized by: Personal Managers and Training Directors for staff training; and Provincial, Federal Counsellors and HRDC Advisors in selecting suitable approved and recommended training facilities for their clients. Over 500,000 students in Canada each year expand their knowledge and improve their employment situation by taking certificate and diploma programs at over 1,500 Canadian career colleges. These career colleges meet the local provincial requirements for registration, program approval, provincial accreditation, certification and approval for students to receive financial assistance for their studies. The provincial educational departments responsible for overseeing the career colleges in their provinces have done an outstanding job of administration. They have concentrated on the regulating of career colleges from the viewpoint of consumer protection and these career colleges provide a viable alternative to the provincial community colleges.
