Embracing Differences:m Postsecondary Education among Aboriginal Students, Students with Children, S   http://www.millenniumscholarships.ca/en/research/embracing_en.pdf  Site Reviews(0)
This report presents an overview of the state of Canadian post-secondary education for Aboriginal Peoples, people with disabilities and students with children. The report analyzes results from two 2002 surveys — the Canadian Undergraduate Student Survey and the Canadian College Student Survey — and places these data in social and historical context. Both surveys gathered data on respondents’ personal and academic characteristics as well as the financing of their education. The university survey also asked a range of questions about university undergraduates’ educational experience and their satisfaction with university facilities, programs and services. The college survey gathered data on expenditure patterns. This analysis focuses on Aboriginal students, students with disabilities and students with children as they are represented in the two surveys. It compares their characteristics to those of a baseline group and outlines some implications for policymakers.

Effects of Facilitation on Cognitive Restructuring in Online Discussion   http://www.ncolr.org/jiol/archives/2005/winter/02/index.html  Site Reviews(0)
This study compared the effects of system-initiated (low-level) facilitation with that of facilitator-initiated plus system-initiated (high-level) facilitation on cognitive restructuring and learning achievement. Graduate students participated in facilitated online discussion within a web course for one semester. This study found no significant effects by employing an online facilitator to provide extra facilitation in addition to the system-initiated facilitation. This finding suggests that well-designed system-initiated facilitation in cognitive restructuring may be sufficient for effective online learning. This study also found a significant correlation between cognitive restructuring and learning achievement, which confirms the importance of facilitating cognitive restructuring for effective online learning (Ausubel, 1963a, 1963b; Piaget, 1980; Vygotsky, 1978). This finding suggests that creating online interaction for facilitating cognitive restructuring should be incorporated into online pedagogy for optimizing online learning effectiveness.

EQAO   http://www.eqao.com/  Site Reviews(0)
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an independent provincial agency funded by the Government of Ontario. EQAO’s mandate is to conduct province-wide tests at key points in every student’s primary, junior and secondary education and report the results to educators, parents and the public. EQAO acts as a catalyst for increasing the success of Ontario students by measuring their achievement in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. The resulting data provide a gauge of quality and accountability in Ontario’s publicly funded education system. The objective and reliable assessment results are evidence that adds to the current knowledge about student learning and serves as an important tool for improvement at the individual, school, school board and provincial levels. EQAO helps build capacity for the appropriate use of data by providing resources that educators, parents, policy-makers and others in the education community can use to improve learning and teaching. EQAO distributes an individual report to each student who writes the tests and posts school, school board and provincial results on its Web site. Schools and school boards also create their own reports of EQAO data for distribution to parents and others in their communities.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations in the Humanities   http://etext.virginia.edu/ETD/ETD.html  Site Reviews(0)
This site serves as a clearing-house for online information related to electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) in the humanities. The site's most important feature is a directory of most (maybe not quite all) of the ETDs that are currently in progress in the various disciplines that comprise the academic humanities. Among its other uses, I hope the material available here will be of aid to graduate students who are faced with securing approval and support for an ETD of their own. Audiences also include faculty who want to make informed decisions about supervising an ETD, as well as librarians, administrators, and academic publishers. Note that the projects collected here represent a broad range of methodologies and subject matter (at least half are devoted to non-"cyber" topics). There is also much diversity in authors' choices of platform, delivery media, and their adoption of proprietary vs. open data standards. This plurality has occasionally drawn criticism from those who are (wisely) concerned with issues of preservation and access. But this site is not intended to put forth any one particular hardware or software implementation or application as an ETD standard -- rather, it is offered as a reference and resource for those interested in tracking the emergence of a new mode of scholarly writing.
